My Promise to You

Psalm 99: The Lord Reigns

“The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble;
he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake.”

Psalm 99:1

There is a cacophony of things in this world vying for control of our thoughts and desires. Whether it’s advertisements trying to persuade us, governments trying to order us, ideologies trying to direct us, or even parents trying to love us, many things seek to chorale us towards their end.

Our God, however, sits over above all these things.  His loving and faithful sovereignty envelops them all. The majestic perfection of his rule will shatter the arrogance of the most potent forces in this world. Even the earth itself, inanimate though it is, will tremble at his command.

When all things ultimately collide with God’s infallible and unfathomable goodness, who will be able to stand? Who could possibly remain unshaken by his glory?

There is one: Christ alone. The lamb who was slain and who now occupies the throne of grace in glory. He exercises his rule in sacrifice. He governs his people by giving his life for them and to them.  And he stands in the presence of God for us.

His righteousness is our confidence, and his rule is our hope. In turning to him, we are embraced by him. In trusting him, we are bound to him. Forgiven. Justified. Sanctified. Glorified.

May his love alone be the authority over our lives, and may it never leave us unmoved and unshaken.
