My Promise to You

Psalm 62: Rest

“Truly my soul finds rest in God;
my salvation comes from him.”

Psalm 62:1

He covers his ears. His eyes instinctively search for a quiet corner. There is so much noise but no harmony; so much activity but no direction; so many people but precious few friendships. He longs for a place where the world can pass by him rather than pass through him.

When will it end? The fighting. The greed. The exploitation. When will things relent? The busyness. The frustration. The powerlessness. Why does it feel like we’re working harder but going slower? Why, in this so-called age of progress, does it feel like we’re accelerating backwards? When will things just stop and stand at ease?

Where will he find solace in this storm? So much to process, so much to consider, so much to carry. He wants to escape, let go, hit reset. He wants something, but what?

He wants things to work and for people to be happy. He wants God to be their daily bread and thankfulness to mark their character. He wants life to be treasured, peace to descend and righteousness to reign. He doesn’t want to be tired anymore.

He wants rest. His soul craves the safety and refuge of a home where gentle waters serenade and warming rays embrace him to the point of weightlessness. He wants to feel light. He wants to feel the light of life wrapped around him and shining out of him. He wants peace.

He falls into the hands of his Saviour king. Noise turns to song as chaos turns to calm. The world passes by, but life floods in. Weightlessness descends. He is carried. In faith, he finds rest in his God.

“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.”
