My Promise to You

Psalm 86: Call on the Lord

“You, Lord, are forgiving and good,
abounding in love to all who call to you.”

Psalm 86:5

Our cries find safe harbour in our Lord. Far from having to hide our weaknesses and sins away, Christian confession finds its primary motivation in the character of God.

Knowing he is forgiving removes any barrier we might have in asking him for forgiveness. Knowing he is good eliminates any doubt that his forgiveness is anything less than complete. Knowing he is abounding in love assures us that he longs to serve us with what is best for us and has an endless capacity to do so.

Imagine if any one of those things were not true. Our life would be marked by misery without end. Confession would be foolish. Calling on him would be futile. We’d have to do all we can to hide our sin and sadness from him. Put on the shiny, happy facade while the cancer within corrodes our soul. There’d be no landing place for our anguish, no resting place for our tears.

Thankfully we need not fear because he is forgiving and good and abounding in love. His character invites us to call on him with absolute confidence, for when we do, he promises to hear and deliver.
