Psalm 2: God’s King
“I have installed my king on Zion,
Psalm 2:6
my holy mountain.”
If we ever start to worry about God’s commitment to us, if ever we find the feet of our faith slipping, then we need only remember this verse:
“I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”
These words lift our eyes and draw our attention to God’s decisive action in history to establish his perfect rule. It subverts our worries by reminding us of Christ’s perfect atoning sacrifice for sin, once for all. It fills us with the assurance of new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Because what is founded in David finds its fulfilment in Jesus. God has done it. He has installed his king.
Moreover, he has put this on display for all the world to see. The installation didn’t happen in some obscure town or remote valley. It happened publicly on Zion, God’s holy hill. God had set this place apart to capture the attention of all mankind. He wanted everyone to know that Jesus was his righteousness revealed.
Though many people do not bend the knee to our glorious king, and while their mockery and taunts may dampen our spirits, his rule is sure, safe and very much worth celebrating.
