Psalm 102: The Value of Humility
“For the Lord will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory.
Psalm 102:16-17
He will respond to the prayer of the destitute;
he will not despise their plea.”
Darwin’s theory of evolution rests largely on the process of natural selection. Under this process, the survival of a species depends on how readily it can adapt to its environment. Those most likely to survive are the ones who conform to and transform with their surroundings.
In this scheme, the weak have no future. They fade, never to re-bloom; they’re expelled, never to return; they die, never to rise again.
Some businesses take their lead from this theory. Every year, General Electric assesses its employees and fires the bottom 10% of performers. Known as the Vitality Curve, this policy intends to enhance GE’s strength as a company.
While this may work for worldly business, it’s not God’s modus operandi in the economy of his kingdom. God rewards frailty. Humility before him and faith in him are his currency. He listens to the humble cries of the vulnerable and meets their desperate need with his glorious presence and powerful grace. He is in the business of restoring, redeeming, rebuilding, reforming and resurrecting. To know this God is true freedom, and it does our souls well to hear it regularly. God’s promise to accept us on the grounds of his mercy and grace alone, rather than on any merits of our performance, liberates us from any worry about our future. His commitment to our well-being and restoration is sure because it rests on him and his strength, not on us and our weakness.
