Psalm 68: Our Burdens Gladly Bearing
“Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior,
Psalm 68:19
who daily bears our burdens.”
Jesus famously promised to give rest to anyone who would come to him. Unlike the Pharisees of the day, who yoked and enslaved God’s people with a works-based righteousness, Jesus offered to ease their burden by carrying it for them. He replaced the yoke of legalism with the yoke of faith in him.
This is the eternal and universal truth of all the Scriptures. God is our Saviour. He carries our burdens. He gives us victory.
Life in this world can weigh heavily. Sin. Suffering. Disease. Divorce. Death. Devastation. But all these things Jesus has taken onto himself. Every daily burden we experience, he carries to the cross where they meet their end. By trusting him, we can live with this assurance. Our burdens are lifted. Our God carries them so our souls can enjoy complete freedom.
Citizenship in this world will load us with all sorts of worry. But as citizens of God’s Kingdom, centred on the lamb who was slain, we see our burdens lifted. And because of this kindness, our voices ring out in praise.
