My Promise to You

Psalm 52: It Is Finished

“For what you have done I will always praise you in the presence of your faithful people. And I will hope in your name, for your name is good.”

Psalm 52:9

The finished work of Christ furnishes our future with unassailable assurance. As he poured his Spirit out on the cross, his parched soul drained of life, one word issued from his mouth: tetelestai. It is finished. In this, Christ himself emphatically declares that he has given his life for us and to us.  It is not a work in progress.  It is done.

But what has he done? Consider, for a start, some evidence from the Gospels. He’s calmed storms, subdued spirits, healed sickness.  He’s caused the blind to see and the lame to walk.  He’s demonstrated gut-wrenching compassion for those burdened by self-serving leadership.  He’s taken on the devil, resisted temptation, and led a perfectly faithful life.  He has been flawlessly obedient to his heavenly father and has loved his people all the way to death.  He’s challenged worldly authorities. He’s washed feet. He’s been wrongfully tried. He’s been mocked, spat on and beaten.  He’s suffered shame.  He’s suffered death.  He’s paid for our sin.  He’s won forgiveness. He’s cleansed us and qualified us for God’s inheritance.  He’s defeated death, brought us into God’s family and prepared a place for us in his eternal kingdom. He’s loved us. He’s given us life.

He has done everything for us. And for all that and more, he deserves endless praise.

“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!” (Rev 5:11)

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and glory and power, for ever and ever!” (Rev 5:13)

There is no name greater than the name of Jesus. God has exalted him to the highest place.  Having finished his work, God raised him from the dead, installing in us a sure footing for faith and an unshakeable foundation for hope.

Father, thank you for all you have done for us in your precious Son.  May we be ever grateful.
