Psalm 105: Promising
“He remembers his covenant forever,
Psalm 105:8
the promise he made, for a thousand generations”
A promise speaks into the space between two parties, connecting them in a way that is unique to the nature of the oath declared. It binds the mind of one to the heart of the other and propels the recipient forward with anticipation of fulfilment. A promise fuels hope.
From the moment a promise is uttered, the clock starts on the test of faithfulness. Can the promiser be trusted? Can the promisee rest securely and step safely into tomorrow on those words?
Psalm 105 reminds us that God’s promises to his people are ever-present in his mind. He never forgets. His enduring commitment is inseparable from his everlasting will. His word will never fade. It spans a thousand lifetimes.
From Abraham to Isaac to Jacob and beyond, history continually testifies to the Lord’s faithfulness. Above all, however, is Jesus: God’s word become flesh (John 1:14), in whom all of God’s promises find their yes (2 Cor 1:20). In Christ, we see the unfailing nature of God’s word (Romans 9:6). He is the bedrock of our safety. Raised from the dead, his Living Word assures us that our sins are forgiven and our souls are secure for all eternity.
May his faithfulness to us always be the catalyst of our faithfulness to each other.
