Psalm 101: Song: The Language of The Soul
“I will sing of your love and justice;
Psalm 101:1
to you, Lord, I will sing praise.”
Singing is a mysterious concept. Why do we do it? Why do we sometimes feel like words alone are not enough and that tuneful accompaniment is the only appropriate form of expression?
Where words are the language of the mind, music is the language of the soul. When the two meet, words inherit a quality that transcends material experience. Rhythm, melody, tune and tone seem to elevate words to a new realm of significance.
Perhaps that’s why song is such an appropriate vehicle for conveying our appreciation for God’s love and justice. Maybe singing is our soul’s attempt to reach for the unreachable and give expression to the inexpressible.
His love and justice are so immeasurable and unfathomable that there will never be enough words, melodies or even time to match their worth fully. But God has given us the ability to create, and through Christ, he provides us with the canvas of eternity on which to craft our songs of praise. A life without song would be dark and dangerous. A life without God’s love and justice would be the same. Thankfully we have the latter to inspire the former.
