Psalm 93: Reliability
“Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
Psalm 93:4
mightier than the breakers of the sea— the Lord on high is mighty.”
The reliability of a promise depends entirely on the promiser’s capacity and capability to fulfil it.
Can we trust God with our eternal care? Can we trust his promise of forgiveness and eternal life? Can we trust him when he says he will overcome the powers that hold sway over this world?
Psalm 93 assures us that no power in all creation can ever eclipse the might of our God. There are forces in this world that can undoubtedly overwhelm us, humble us and even break us. Their chaotic fury can easily consume us.
But they can’t swallow our God.
He caused the entire cosmos to spring into existence simply by his breath. His word was so commanding that even the emptiness of a lifeless world was compelled to obey him. As the words “Let there be” rang out into the void, “nothing” obediently transformed into something. As his Spirit hovered over the waters, their chaos was subdued, ushering in a platform for life.
Like the disciples in Mark 4, there may be times when we’re terrified and tempted to say, “Do you not care if we perish?”. In those times, it’s good to remember that the waves which so often overwhelm us are no match for our Lord. Creation will never overpower its creator.
Our God will rise up. He will stand. And from on high, he will cry, “be still”. And we will be safe.
His word is powerful. We can trust him with our lives.
